The sumo deadlift offers better leverage than conventional, but it also requires better technique. The first step in mastering the sumo deadlift is to figure out your ideal stance width. For more, check out the "Powerlifting: Year 1" ebook at elitefts.com.

i dont think i would ever feel good about doing this type of lift. no matter how much weight is on there i would never feel its my max. this style seems like cheating, with the limited range of motion. is this why we see alot of people doing it this style now? why is this legal in any competition? just asking

Different stances favor different lifters. While sumo offers a clear advantage in terms of range of motion, it is not necessarily going to be the best choice for you. Many of the sport's great pullers have been conventional (Bolton, Heisey, Magnusson), not because they felt it was more honorable, but because it worked better for them. This stance is allowed so that lifters may choose the style that works best for them. There is no stance restriction for the squat either.
